{"id":87,"date":"2011-01-23T17:15:42","date_gmt":"2011-01-24T01:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/robertbyam.com\/ces\/?p=87"},"modified":"2025-03-18T14:26:19","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T22:26:19","slug":"back-in-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robertbyam.com\/ces\/2011\/01\/23\/back-in-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Back in Business!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, I went to Frys and the cheapest flash programmer they had was $200, so I didn&#8217;t get one.\u00a0 I started reading some more stuff online.\u00a0 The BIOS maker for my BIOS does include a recovery option: if you put the BIOS ROM file on a floppy disk it will load it at boot (only if the current one is bad).\u00a0 However, I saw complaints in Zotac&#8217;s forums that since newer boards don&#8217;t even have floppy connectors (SATA only), they were unable to recover from failed BIOS flashing.\u00a0 But, I did find that some machines have special instructions to recover from a USB stick, but those instructions were tailored to specific models.<\/p>\n<p>So, I plugged in my USB stick when booting, and I noticed that the light on the stick would flash every couple seconds.\u00a0 So, I tried using the floppy instructions only substituting the USB stick.\u00a0 And what do you know!\u00a0 It recovered the BIOS and now we&#8217;re back in business.\u00a0 In fact, I&#8217;m writing this blog post from the CES computer!<\/p>\n<p>I tried changing the BIOS image to different formats and a couple different ways of flashing, but still no luck.\u00a0 I was using a tool created for the AMI type BIOS to automatically replace the image.\u00a0 So instead, I downloaded a newer tool that is more complicated and manages all assests in the BIOS ROM.\u00a0 Using this tool, I removed the current boot image and inserted mine, and this time it worked!\u00a0 Now, when I hit the power button on the computer, this is the first thing seen on the TV:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/robertbyam.com\/ces\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_4118.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-84\" title=\"BIOS Logo Replacement Test\" src=\"http:\/\/robertbyam.com\/ces\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_4118-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"BIOS Logo Replacement Test\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robertbyam.com\/ces\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_4118-400x266.jpg 400w, https:\/\/robertbyam.com\/ces\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_4118-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/robertbyam.com\/ces\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/IMG_4118.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was just a test image.
